BCNU's position that next possible opportunity for LPNs to choose their union representation should be sooner rather than later is upheld
The BC Labour Relations Board (LRB) ruled on Friday June 18, 2010 that despite the over 3,000 applications for BCNU membership that were signed by LPNS, the majority required by November 30, 2009 was not achieved. This means that a representational vote cannot take place at this time.
However, the position that BCNU took, that LPNS who are seeking a choice of representation by another union should not have to wait unnecessarily, was upheld by the LRB. The HEU, BCGEU and other unions tried to convince the LRB that the time allowed before LPNS could apply for a change of union representation should be longer than what is stated in the Labour Code. Their arguments were not successful.
This means that the next opportunity for the majority of B.C.'s LPNs to consider who should represent them will be next fall, in 2011.
In March 2010, BCNU delegates voted at their annual convention to continue the effort to
unite all nurses in B.C.
BCNU Council will be meeting to discuss a future plan of action.
