Darcy's false information about LPN bumping highlights why LPNs want to join a professional nurses' union
Judy Darcy's September 21 letter to all BC LPNs illustrates exactly why LPNs are lining up in thousands to leave HEU and join BCNU. Her letter contains a disappointing new falsehood where she claims that "RNs could use their seniority to bump LPNs."
It's unfortunate that any response to correspondence of that nature is necessary. BCNU would rather debate union affiliation in terms of what various organizations have to offer future members. But Judy Darcy's most recent falsehoods to LPNs call for a response because her statement about bumping makes no sense from either a collective agreement or economic perspective.
- Judy Darcy knows there is nothing in either the provincial RN or LPN collective agreements that allow RNs to bump LPNs. It's completely dishonest for her to suggest that LPNs can be bumped by RNs when it simply cannot be done.
- Even if it was possible for RNs to bump LPNs (which it's not) why would RNs take an annual pay cut of between $8000.00 to $25,000.00 when they can fill almost 2000 existing RN vacancies in BC. Darcy offers no explanation for this. She offers no explanation because one doesn't exist.
But, Darcy's false statement on bumping has come to light. On September 21 she wrote to all BC LPNs saying "RNs could use their seniority to bump them."But on September 29 HEU sent emails to LPNs in the Fraser Health Region saying "Fraser Health RN layoffs will not impact the seniority rights of LPNs "because the truth is RNs cannot bump LPNs. Why does Judy Darcy spread false information to all LPNs in BC then tell the truth only to LPNs in the Fraser Health Authority who are afraid of layoffs and bumping?
Fortunately, her false statements help clarify the choice LPNs are facing. And the choice is this – which union will best serve LPNs' future needs from their union? Will LPNs remain at HEU where the leadership uses outright dishonesty to frighten them into staying, or will LPNs join BCNU and build collaborate careers with other nurses who understand their need for professionalism.
For years LPNs have asked HEU for stronger contracts, professional representation and better services. Their call for renewal has gone unanswered. Now thousands of LPNs have signed up with BCNU.
