Consider this – if you were a BCNU member since 2001 and received the same annual increase as nurses in our provincial agreement, your 2009 annual salary would be $8151.00 higher than it is right now.

SINCE 2001, RAISES AT BCNU TOTALED 40.2%. AT HEU/BCGEU THEY WERE ONLY 19.6%

Since 2001, raises HEU/BCGEU negotiated for LPNs accumulated to only 19.6%. In the same period, nurses in BCNU’s provincial agreement got cumulative raises totaling 40.2%. That’s over $8000.00 more than your 2009 annual salary and equivalent to $28.94 per hour.

LPNs IN MANITOBA ARE IN A NURSES’ UNION. THEIR HOURLY RATE IS $29.03

Because HEU and BCGEU have done so poorly for LPNs in BC, that $8151.00 annual increase might seem hard to imagine. But for us it looks achievable. This is why – right now LPNs in Manitoba make $29.03 per hour.

Manitoba LPNs make a good wage because they negotiate with RNs and RPNs. In Manitoba 97% of all unionized licensed nurses are in a nurses’ union. That gives them strength to bargain higher wages. The same can happen in BC.

WAGE INCREASES OR MORE ROLLBACKS /FREEZES – LPNs MUST CHOOSE

HEU has a very weak position because healthcare restructuring will cause layoffs of potentially thousands of their members. HEU will be tempted to keep those jobs in their union by rolling back the salaries of all HEU members. They don’t have the strength to negotiate wage increases for LPNs.

Your contract will expire in March 2010. The question LPNs need to answer is this: who do you trust to negotiate higher wages for you -- HEU/BCGEU or BCNU? While no union can absolutely guarantee wage gains, BCNU’s results are more than double HEU/BCGEU’s. That’s why we’re confident BCNU can give LPNs a far better future.
