BC Business Magazine’s November 2009 edition
published a well balanced article about LPNs’ desire
to join BCNU. It talks about solidarity and the rights
of employees to change unions. Click the link below to read
the article.
BC Business Magazine article on LPNs
Since LPNs approached BCNU for membership they’ve had
more attention than they’ve ever had. BCNU would like
to see that continue -- in positive ways.
A great way for LPNs to get more positive attention is by signing
a BCNU membership card. Then we can start bargaining higher
wages, better practice conditions and expanded career opportunities
for all nurses.
LPN scope of practice – BCNU’s already supported expansion
If you’ve read some of HEU’s
information on scope of practice you might come to the inaccurate
conclusion that BCNU keeps LPNs locked in dungeons.
But a lot of what HEU’s said isn’t truthful. We
want to continue building collaborative practices among all
nurses. Here’s a few things we’ve done to promote
collaborative practices and expanded scope for LPNs:
- BCNU Council
passes a motion supporting expanded utilization of LPNs (2002)
- BCNU promotes utilization of LPNs in operating rooms (2006)
- BCNU endorses statement “LPNs and RNs are independent,
licensed professionals and are solely responsible for their
practice” (2003)

Voicemails from HEU are wrong again!
Recent HEU voicemails say that only 1,900 LPNs have signed
membership cards and BCNU will make an application to represent
LPNs only at various worksites.
Suffice it to say that HEU has no idea how many LPNs have
signed BCNU cards. They don’t know because we haven’t
told them. BCNU’s Labour Board application to
represent LPNs will be province wide, not site-by-site.
Our goal is to build nursing solidarity for
better contracts, working conditions and patient care.
Please send your signed membership cards
to BCNU by November 23.
